Boating and Fishing Patches for Scouts

This is certainly a special year for the Boy Scouts of America – as they celebrate their 100th anniversary at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree. The event has been around since 1937, but this year scouts from all 50 states and 26 nations will gather to experience the centennial celebration. The Take Me Fishing campaign wanted to get involved and make it easier for Scouts to participate in boating and fishing.

This year the campaign introduced three exciting new patches: the Passport Patch, First Catch Patch and the Mentor Patch.  Each patch promotes the merits of the sport and encourages scouts to plan and organize fishing trips.

  • Passport Patch – Cub Scouts and Scouts aged 6 to 11 earn this patch by completing an introductory six-step program that teaches various skills to be knowledgeable, safe and confident while boating and fishing.
  • First Catch Patch – Cub Scouts and Scouts aged 6 to 11 earn this patch by organizing a real-life fishing trip using the resources found on TakeMeFishing.org.
  • Mentor Patch – Scouts aged 12 to 17 earn this patch by organizing a fishing trip for newcomers to the sport. The Mentor Patch develops leadership qualities and introduces someone new to boating and fishing.

Check out these testimonials from scout leaders about the new patches –

“We did the Passport Program for our cub scout pack. It was a BLAST! The boys LOVED it! Thank you for having such a great program. The boys can’t wait for our upcoming fishing trip/derby.”

“I had my bear den do the First Catch program. The boys thought it was great. We made back yard bait containers and dug worms. The boys had a ball catching small bass and perch with their worms. Thanks for a great program.”

“Recently took our Cub Scout pack fishing. Each Scout crafted/rigged their own bamboo fishing pole and went fishing. Everyone had a great time and is hooked on fishing!”
