Fish Guilds

B.A.S.S. is an acronym for “Bass Anglers’ Sportsman Society.” With a membership of over 500,000, B.A.S.S. is one of the largest angling groups in the United States and is dedicated to the promotion and conservation of the sport fishery involving the fish of its namesake, bass (generally largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted.)

As much as I love bass fishing, I try to appreciate all species of fish that I catch. If the bass aren’t biting, that “Plan B” fish can be just as much fun.

So, it got me thinking about potential acronyms for other groups who may focus on one particular species of fish…

Taking a cue from B.A.S.S. and having the first letter always stand for the fish itself, here are a few examples:

Walleye Anglers Legendary League of Enthusiastic Youth Encouragers

Drum Reeling Up Machines

Chub Hunters United Brotherhood

Gar Appreciation Ring

Pike International Knighthood of Enthusiasts

Shad Honorary Association of Diehards

What Society do you belong to? I’d love to hear some others.

Andy Whitcomb is a columnist, outdoor humorist, and stressed-out Dad. He says there are “people who fish”… and there are “fishermen”. One of the few things he knows is that he is a “fisherman”... To the point it could be classified as borderline illness. Sharing this obsession is rewarding, therapeutic. He likes to encourage people to “stop and smell the crappie." Enjoys catching fish, but gets a greater thrill out of helping someone else hook up. Born in Florida, but raised on the banks of Oklahoma farm ponds. Now relocated to western Pennsylvania. He has fished, worked, lived all around the US. He has a B.S. in Zoology from Oklahoma State as well... And he met his wife while electrofishing. He has been contributing weekly to since 2011.                                                                                Find out about the rest of Take Me Fishing Blog Authors.
